Comfortable at the table
Competitive in the game
Confident in your moves
They're not wrong, exactly. It is easy, once you know. But from the outside, mahjong looks like a different language. Tiles covered in symbols. A card of hands written in what appears to be code. Players calling things out and moving fast, like they're all in on something you're not.
But every player at every table started exactly where you are.
And every one of them had to be taught.
I learned mahjong the hard way. Scattered videos, contradictory advice, and every mistake you can possibly make. Then I practiced every day until it clicked and started going to open plays to build my confidence. Before long I was teaching my family and friends the game, and being asked to teach others too.
I built The Mahjong School to be the thing I couldn't find when I started: everything in one place, in the right order, so you're ready when you sit down at the table. Nobody should have to learn it the way I did.
The Mahjong School Studio is a dedicated mahjong room in my home about 15 minutes from downtown Winston-Salem, NC. With seating for three tables of four, it's a welcoming space to learn, play, and enjoy the game.
